Fifty rescue workers and 12 special vehicles have been sent to help around 400 people and numerous vehicles trapped in snow. No human casualty has so far been reported.

Following the sudden fall in temperatures since Friday and snowstorms in many places, many calls were received during the weekend from people asking to be rescued, according to B.Dulamsuren, spokeswoman of General Emergency Authority. Three buses and 100 cars were also trapped in snow.

In Dornogobi for example, 60 people were lost while herding livestock. Three herders in Sukhbaatar, and a seven-year-old boy in Gobi-Altai were found safe and sound, Dulamsuren said.

Roads to Emeelt, Ski Base, Galzuu Khariin Khudag and Bayantsogt soum were impassable, causing a traffic jam. Limited visibility because of the snowstorm left vehicles stranded until a rescue team led by the director of the Emergency Authority swung into action. The snow blocked several roads in Ulaanbaatar.
